Description
Taous is the peacock. In Moroccan decorative craft it appears on ceramics, on painted wood and on embroidered textiles, always facing a mirrored twin, always framed by foliage. This jacket puts two of them on a deep navy velvet ground, worked in pale embroidery that catches the light the way the pile does.
The birds are placed low on the front, one on each side, with small fan motifs repeating on the sleeves and cuffs. The cut is oversized with a dropped shoulder and a spread collar, and ornamental buttons carry the house motif down the placket and at the wrists.
Velvet is what makes it work. It holds the embroidery in relief instead of flattening it, and it moves between an evening piece and a jacket worn open over black.
